Workshop: Operationalizing the Global Compact Human Rights Principles Wilder Room, 4th floor, Marriott Marquis
Organized by the Institute for Human Rights and Business and the Global Compact Network Netherlands (GCNL) in collaboration with the Global Compact Office and also supported by the Government of the Netherlands and the Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development. Companies wishing to learn more about how to put human rights principles into business practice can find guidance in the concept of human rights due diligence developed by the UN Special Representative on business and human rights, Professor John Ruggie. The workshop presents two new human rights publications for business: “The ‘State of Play’ of Human Rights Due Diligence: Anticipating the Next Five Years,” by the Institute, and “How to do business with respect for human rights: a guidance tool for companies,” by GCNL. A number of the 30 multinational companies that participated in the research for the publications, including Novartis, Rabobank and Shell, will share their experiences with considering human rights due diligence. The Global Compact Office will also elaborate on how companies -- in addition to respect – can support human rights. Challenges and Opportunities in Implementing Collective Action Against Corruption The Booth & Edison Rooms, 5th floor, Marriott Marquis
Will discuss the concept of Collective Action as well as challenges and opportunities during the implementation phase. Business-led “Collective Action” is an effective strategy that allows corporate decision-makers to collaborate with industry peers, civil society and Government to fight corruption and increase transparency in high-risk situations. The session will be led by the World Bank Institute’s working group on Collective Action, whose members include the Global Compact, Transparency International, the Center for International Private Enterprise, the Global Advice Network, Siemens, Grant Thornton and the Organization of American States.
