Launch of New Global Compact Tools for Local Networks and Participants

Introduces the Global Compact Self Assessment Tool (online resource) and the Global Compact Dilemma Game (board game). Both were designed to assist companies to better understand and implement the ten principles of the Global Compact and to facilitate the development of a company’s Communication on Progress. This event will give participants an opportunity to test the tools themselves.

The Global Compact Self Assessment Tool is a joint initiative by the Confederation of Danish Industries, the Danish Institute for Human Rights, the Danish Ministry of Economic and Business Affairs, and the Danish Industrialisation Fund for Developing Countries. The Global Compact Dilemma Game was sponsored by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, developed by Responsible Business Solutions and produced by TopToy.

Hosted by the Institute for Human Rights and Business, the Global Business Initiative on Human Rights, and the Global Compact Network Netherlands (GCNL), with support from the Governments of Switzerland and the Netherlands, the Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development, and the Global Compact Office.
Mary Robinson (Chair of the Institute for Human Rights and Business, Board Member of the UN Global Compact and Chair of its Human Rights Working Group) will moderate a panel featuring Professor John Ruggie (UN Special Representative on business and human rights), Mr Jamshed Irani (Director of the Board, Tata Sons), Mr Paul Polman (CEO, Unilever Plc.), His Excellency Ambassador Mr Herman Schaper (Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the United Nations), and His Excellency Ambassador Mr Martin Dahinden (Director General of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation).
The panel will discuss the United Nations framework for Business and Human Rights (“Protect, Respect and Remedy”) and how governments and companies can benefit from and support it. New publications on human rights due diligence will be formally launched by the Institute (a state of play review) and GCNL (a guidance tool).

In this forum, we will discuss new methods for collaborative partnership investing, including but not limited to leveraging public sector financing for infrastructure development, Diaspora participation, and creating a network economy to facilitate capital flow. 17:45 – 19:00 Workshop: Operationalizing the Global Compact Human Rights Principles

Organized by the Institute for Human Rights and Business and the Global Compact Network Netherlands (GCNL) in collaboration with the Global Compact Office and also supported by the Government of the Netherlands and the Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development. Companies wishing to learn more about how to put human rights principles into business practice can find guidance in the concept of human rights due diligence developed by the UN Special Representative on business and human rights, Professor John Ruggie.
The workshop presents two new human rights publications for business: “The ‘State of Play’ of Human Rights Due Diligence: Anticipating the Next Five Years,” by the Institute, and “How to do business with respect for human rights: a guidance tool for companies,” by GCNL. A number of the 30 multinational companies that participated in the research for the publications, including Novartis, Rabobank and Shell, will share their experiences with considering human rights due diligence. The Global Compact Office will also elaborate on how companies -- in addition to respect – can support human rights. Free hard copies of the publications will be available for participants of the workshop.

Will discuss the concept of Collective Action as well as challenges and opportunities during the implementation phase. Business-led “Collective Action” is an effective strategy that allows corporate decision-makers to collaborate with industry peers, civil society and Government to fight corruption and increase transparency in high-risk situations. The session will be led by the World Bank Institute’s working group on Collective Action, whose members include the Global Compact, Transparency International, the Center for International Private Enterprise, the Global Advice Network, Siemens, Grant Thornton and the Organization of American States. Djordjija Petkoski, Lead Specialist at the World Bank, will present the concept and approaches of Collective Action, while other members of the Working Group will share experiences and lessons learned from implementing their Collective Action initiatives.

The PRI Initiative, launched by the UN Global Compact and UNEP Finance Initiative in 2006 and now with over 730 signatories, has successfully facilitated investor engagements with companies of Global Compact work streams such as the Communication on Progress(COP), CEO Water Mandate, the 10th Principle on Anti-corruption, and Responsible Business in Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas. As the Global Compact celebrates its tenth anniversary, PRI signatories and Board members invite investors and Global Compact companies to join them in discussing the roadmap for the next ten years of shareholder engagement. PRI Board Chair, Mr. Donald MacDonald, will moderate a discussion on how successful investor engagement with the Global Compact has been to date and how investors and companies can help to improve this dialogue. The new Global Compact -PRI Guidance on Responsible Business in Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas: A Resource for Companies and Investors will be showcased by F&C Investments and a leading company. The Guidance seeks to provide a common reference point for constructive dialogue between companies and investors on what constitutes responsible business in difficult operating environments.  All Expert Group Members involved in the development of the Guidance are encouraged to attend.

Director General of the Norwegian Ministry of Finance, Mr. Martin Skancke, will present the Norwegian Government Pension Fund and its ethical guidelines. The Norwegian Government Pension Fund is the second largest sovereign wealth fund in the world, with 445 billion USD market value as of December 2009. Ethical guidelines for the management of the fund were established in 2004, prohibiting investments that contribute to violations of fundamental ethical norms, human rights and environmental degradation.

Innovation for the Base of the Pyramid

The topic for discussion is the potential for companies to build on their innovative capabilities to develop products and services that provide solutions to the world’s most urgent social and environmental challenges. There will be a special emphasis on the needs of the poor (the base of the pyramid) and what is required to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
The event will feature short introductory interventions on the potential for the private sector to develop market-based solutions to meeting global social and environmental challenges as well as on the needs at the base of the pyramid, followed by an open floor discussion.

This session will provide an overview of the latest standards and guidance tools that are designed to help businesses improve their human rights performance at the corporate and project levels. Hosted by IFC, International Business Leaders Forum (IBLF) and the Global Compact, this session will feature the revised version of the Guide to Human Rights Impact Assessment and Management and show how it will help companies better assess and address the human rights risks and impacts in their operations; improve due diligence; and meet the new requirements in the draft, updated IFC Performance Standards.
